Mandatory Colour code for school vans

(UTV | COLOMBO) – New laws are to be introduced to make a colour code for school vans mandatory in future, the Transport Ministry said yesterday.

Transport Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and representatives of school van associations held discussions on issues faced by them yesterday.

Amaraweera said that among the issues discussed was the need to introduce a colour code for school vans.

The minister said that he proposed that all school vans be painted yellow in line with a government policy decision. However, the associations opposed the move saying it would be costly for them to paint their vans.

It was decided as an alternative that school vans registered in future should be painted in yellow, while existing school vans will have a yellow bar painted across them.

He said that once the new parliament is convened, a gazette notice will be issued and approval sought to enact the new laws.
