‘Submitted docs on match fixing allegations’

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage says he provided a statement over the allegations to the Police Special Investigations Unit.

Aluthgamage speaking to media in Nawalapitiya said he also handed over a six-page complaint to the Police.

A team of the Police Special Investigation Unit visited Aluthgamage’s office in Nawalapitiya to record a statement over his allegations.

Mahindananda Aluthgamage said he also handed over eight documents related to his complaint over match-fixing.

Aluthgamage said the International Cricket Council in a letter to Former Sports Minister Harin Fernando cited Sri Lanka as allegedly being involved in match fixing and called for an investigation.

He added while various individuals responded to his claim, he refrained from responding back and called for a just investigation.

He claimed there were various comments made over his statement pertaining to match fixing allegations by politicians and sportsmen alike.

Aluthgamage noted that while some said the statement was a political gimmick, others stated the former government gave away the World Cup final, while several other questioned why the charges were not investigated for the past nine years.

However he stated that he did not respond to the charges and will now allow investigations to be carried out.

Aluthgamage called on the President and the Minister of Sports to conduct investigations and provide a report in three months.

He questioned why investigations were not carried out after the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit said of the 12 Test playing nations, serious attention must be directed to Sri Lanka.

The Former Sports Minister called for the law to be enforced, adding that he took the first step in this direction.

He said the documents include information on management and all factions.

While acknowledging that Sri Lanka love the sport of cricket, he cited that as one reason for the information to be directed to authorities.

Aluthgamage urged the public and authorities to refrain from discussing the matter in detail and called for a just investigation.
