(UTV | COLOMBO) – Senior Attorney Lal Wijenayake says he believes that the General Election will be held by the end of August, considering the present situation in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing in Kandy today, Wijenayake revealed there have been reports citing that health authorities have issued guidelines to the Election Commission pertaining to the conduct of the Parliamentary Polls.
He stressed that the present Government will not be a stable one, if they do not represent the wishes of the people.
It was Wijenayake’s view that people will riot against the administration if democracy is not upheld.
The Senior Attorney meanwhile said the main responsibility vested with the Election Commission, is to conduct a free and fair election, where the people’s mandate is fulfilled.
He pointed out that the elected Government will not be focused on developing the country, as they will be too busy solving conflicts among people, in the event an unfair advantage is given to the government over the opposition.
With the present militarisation of the country, Wijenayake noted that the people were afraid that Democracy may not be upheld.
He stressed that such a situation would lead to political instability within the country.
Senior Attorney Lal Wijenayake also said that the imminent election was of vital importance as the world faces a pandemic.
