(UTV | COLOMBO) – Former Minister Lakshman Kiriella says he has received information pertaining to the accepting of applications for the ‘Suraksha’ student insurance scheme being suspended for next year.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy the former Minister said if the government takes steps to suspend the insurance scheme, it is unjust for the students.
The validity period of the agreement signed by the Ministry of Education with the relevant insurance company for the ‘Suraksha’ insurance scheme ends today.
Kiriella said while applications for next year were due to be accepted from tomorrow, the relevant insurance company had informed that the acceptance of applications for the ‘Suraksha’ insurance scheme has been suspended.
The former Minister stated the Rs.2 billion had been provided to parents of students under the insurance scheme, in order to support parents.
Kiriella added the insurance is essential for students at present amidst the crisis and therefore urged the government to take measures to continue the programme.
