(UTV|COLOMBO) – Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued directives to formulate a new animal welfare Act.
The Premier had issued these directives to officials during a meeting with representatives of animal welfare societies.
The prevention of cruelty to animals and animal welfare laws and acts were subject of discussion during the meeting.
Attention was also directed to amending laws governing the prevention of cruelty to animals.
Representatives of animal welfare societies had brought to the attention of the Prime Minister, the fact that although regulations over prevention of animal cruelty exist, they are not implemented effectively.
