(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Sri Lanka Freedom Party says the General Election may be contested in the North and East, under the banner of the United People’s Freedom Alliance.
However SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said a final decision is yet to be reached on the matter.
He said the United People’s Freedom Alliance will continue to function in the country, adding Maithripala Sirisena remains as its leader and Mahinda Amaraweera functions as the UPFA General Secretary.
Jayasekara said the People’s Alliance was formed in 1994 while the UPFA was established later to contest elections.
He explained that these two alliances can be used to contest future elections as well, adding they may even contest the next General Election under a common symbol in the North and Eastern Provinces.
