Grade 1 classes to have 40 students?

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a cabinet paper tabled by Minister of Education Dallas Alahapperuma, to seek approval of the Supreme Court, to increase the number of students that can be admitted to a Grade 1 class of government-approved schools from 35 to 40.

The Supreme Court previously concluded that the maximum number of students in a Grade 1 class should be limited to thirty-five.

A statement issued by the Education Ministry noted that through the recruitment of teaching assistants, as stated in the President’s election manifesto, undue pressure and management difficulties primary school class teachers face could be prevented.

Thereby the statement added the number of students in Grade 1 classes will be increased from 35 to 40.
