Air pollution levels record spike today

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Air pollution levels in several major cities in the island including Colombo have risen once again today.

At 9.30am, the Air Quality Index in Colombo reached 163, while in Kandy levels had risen to 184, which fall into the ‘unhealthy’ category between 151 and 200.

The National Building Research Organisation attributed the reason as being an increase in dust particles in the air.

The NBRO accordingly said that children, elderly persons, pregnant mothers and persons with respiratory disorders should remain alert of air quality levels.

People have been urged to limit outdoor activity and wear facemasks outdoors if possible.
