(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Ceylon Teachers’ Union has called for the Suraksha Student Insurance scheme to be brought under the Ministry of Education instead of private insurance companies.
Secretary Joseph Stalin when contacted by an online news portal in the isle has stated that the benefits of the scheme should be granted to students in a transparent manner.
He said the insurance scheme is granted to 4.4 million students, and is carried out with a state insurance firm with Rs.2.5 million allocated for the scheme.
However, Stalin said only around Rs.400 million has been spent as part of the scheme.
He added the scheme was later signed with a private insurance firm adding that the contract ended in November 2019 and claimed the present government is looking into extending the contract with the insurance firm.
Stalin stated that instead of carrying out the Suraksha scheme through insurance firms, the programme should instead be carried out through the Education Ministry.
