CMEV observers to monitor Elpitiya PSE

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence says observers will be deployed to monitor Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election activity from Monday onwards.

CMEV National Coordinator Manjula Gajanayake said a joint effort from the Elections Commission, Police and Election Monitoring Bodies in this regard is anticipated.

He said observers will be deployed from Monday the 14th of September until the 13th of October, whilst on the day of the election itself 3-4 special teams will be stationed to monitor proceedings.

However he noted the CMEV does not believe it to be necessary to deploy a large number of observers for this particular election.

Nevertheless Gajanayake noted it is hoped that the Elections Commission, Police and other election monitoring bodies will combine their efforts to monitor activity during this time.

He remarked that certain charges have been levelled with regard to this election, including the use of state property among other concerns, adding the CMEV expects to keep the public informed.

Gajanayake said that despite a delay, the conduct of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election is a victory for the people.
