20 % of undergrads give up Uni education due to ragging

(UTV|COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena said 20% of undergrads give up University education as they cannot stand ragging.

“Some of them become mentally imbalanced for life and several others commit suicide. Some become disabled after extreme physical ragging,” he said.

“Is this the way we produce an educated society? Are we going to hand over this country to these people? What joy do the so-called seniors get after treating freshers like this?” he asked.

He said he was perusing some photos and reports yesterday and he was shocked at what he read and saw.

“I wanted to show the pictures to you but decided against it as they were barbaric. The pictures portrayed how seniors tortured freshers,” the President said.

President Sirisena added that responsible and patriotic youth useful for the country could be produced only through love and mutual respect to fellow citizens.

He was addressing a gathering of youth following the opening of “SMART SRI LANKA” Vocational Training Institute in Katugastota.

The institute was established with the objective of empowering youth with skills to face challenges in the future.

The President handed over letters vesting the responsibilities of the ‘Smart Sri Lanka’ project in the Kandy district.

Governors Sarath Ekanayake, Rajitha Keerthi Tennakoon, public representatives of the area, including State Minister Buddhika Pathirana, former MP Shantha Bandara, Kandy District Secretary D.M.N.G. Karunarathna, Mr. Ravi Jayawardana Chairman of Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka, the Director-General of the Smart Sri Lanka Project, Eric Prasanna and several others participated in this event.

The President also vested with the public, the newly built 100-bed ward complex at the Provincial Ayurvedic Hospital in Pallekele.
