Thehan and Oneli bag U16 single titles

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Royalist Thehan Wijemanne and Bridgeteen Oneli Perera clinched the under-16 boys’ and girls’ singles crowns respectively as the 104th Colombo Championship tennis tournament worked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) clay courts yesterday.

Thehan tamed Shivendra Perera 6/3, 6/1 in the boys’ U-16 singles final and Oneli defeated Preethika Chandramohan 6/1, 6/0 in the U-16 girls’ singles final.

Earlier Thehan beat Zaid Zihar 6/3, 6/0 in easy straight sets to win the semi-final and Oneli defeated Sadhija Razeek 6/2, 6/1 in the girls’ semi-final.

The under-12 boys’ singles final saw Tharook Marasinghe winning the title beating Methwan Wijemanne 6/2, 6/3 and the girls’ under-12 title was won by Ruvi Lewkebandara who defeated Oneli Samarawickrema 6/4, 6/3 in the final.

The Colombo Championship is considered a top annual clay court tournament and one of the most anticipated tournaments among the local tennis fraternity. Altogether 11 events from the under-12 age category to open events were lined up for this year’s tournament. The nearly month-long tournament commenced on July 5 and will conclude on July 27. All matches are worked out at the SLTA courts. (DN)
