“MIB: International” heads for USD 40 million opening

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Sony Pictures’ action comedy “Men in Black: International” is heading for a $40 million launch in North America in mid-June according to early tracking figures.

That would be the lowest opening to date for the series which has consistently pulled in first weekend hauls in the low $50 million range, but early figures tend to move upwards so that could well change. The series has made $1.6 billion in worldwide box office thus far.

One key difference with this new entry is price. ‘International’ is set to come in at a budget of $110 million – half that of the previous series outing “Men in Black III”. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson portray the new agents dealing with aliens among us in the film.

In addition, the $35 million new “Shaft” film starring Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie T. Usher will reportedly take in around $18 million during the same frame. This third iteration of the “Shaft” franchise will be launched globally outside North America in early July on Netflix.
