(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Department of Meteorology on Wednesday (01) requested the public, Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant as the cloudy skies, strong winds, and showery conditions are expected to continue over the island and surrounding sea areas.
This is due to the extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘FANI’ (Pronounced as FONI) over West-Central and South-West Bay of Bengal to the North-East of Sri Lanka, which was located near about 650 kilometres North-East of Trincomalee.
It is likely to intensify further and move North – North-Eastwards, the Met. Department stated.
Meanwhile, the strong winds up to 60 kilometres per hour can be expected over the island today, particularly in Central hilly areas, Northern, North-Central, Uva and Southern Provinces, and in Puttalam, Trincomalee and Batticaloa Districts.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over most parts of the island, while very heavy falls about (100 – 150) millimetres can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western and North-Western Provinces, and also fairly heavy falls about (75 – 100) millimetres are likely at some places in Uva Province and in Mannar and Jaffna Districts, the Met. Department further stressed.
