(UTV|COLOMBO) – A total of 44 Parliamentarians of the United National Front have signed a letter urging President Maithripala Sirisena to appoint former Army Commander Field Marshal Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order.
Speaking to a prominent online news portal, Parliamentarian Ashu Marasinghe said several more MPs are due to sign the letter during the course of the day.
Meanwhile Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has expressed his willingness to step down from his Ministerial position in order to pave way for Former Army Commander Parliamentarian Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka to be appointed as Minister of Law and Order.
A spokesman of the United National Party has stated that the Minister Ranatunga expressed his sentiments during a meeting of government representatives yesterday.
Minister Ranatunga had stated that he is willing to step down as the number of Cabinet Ministers cannot exceed 30.
The UNP backbenchers meanwhile directed a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena requesting MP Field Marshall Sarath Fonseka be appointed as the Minister of Law and Order.
