Civil group wants General Election delayed

UTV | COLOMBO -The Foundation for Peoples’ Rights Protection says a complaint will be lodged with the Election Commission this afternoon requesting the Parliamentary Election to be postponed.

Speaking to prominent news portal in the isle Operations Director of the Foundation Asela Sampath said the complaint is being lodged as a free and fair election cannot be conducted when health and safety is at risk.

Asela Sampath said with several COVID-19 cases were detected from Rajanganaya recently, a major issue has arisen pertaining to the safe conduct of the election.

He claimed people’s lives cannot be put at risk in order for the government to obtain a two thirds majority in Parliament by conducting the General Election.

He stressed therefore; the Election Commission must prioritise the people’s right to life over people’s democracy.
