Navy accused of chasing away Tamil Nadu fishermen from island waters

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have accused the Sri Lankan Navy personnel of chasing them back to Indian waters while they were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet Sunday morning (04).

A fisheries official in Rameswaram has told the Press Trust of India that over 2,500 Fishermen from Rameswaram had ventured into sea in 485 mechanized boats on Saturday (03) and were fishing near Katchatheevu when Sri Lankan Naval personnel came to the spot and snapped their nets.

The Sri Lankan Navy personnel, who came in three ships, also warned the fishermen not to poach fish near Katchatheevu and snapped the nets of 20 boats, Fishermen Association president said.
