Police to act against tinted windows & drapes of vehicles

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Sri Lanka Police says the law against motorists tinting windows and drapes will be strictly enacted in order to identify individuals who violate road rules. Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Motor Traffic Division Palitha Fernando speaking at a media briefing yesterday (27th Friday) said the law was introduced mainly focused on identifying those violating regulations.

The DIG added the law that has been in effect for some time will be reinforced. He said the law in place is old adding some people have been claiming that it’s a new introduction.

The DIG stated that if an individual or vehicle is found to be part of a crime the motorist can easily seek cover in vehicles with tints and drapes. He added the vehicle can be identified through the number plate, but it will not be possible to produce eye witnesses in such an instance.

DIG Palitha Fernando added those found to have tinted windows and drapes will not be slapped with legal action in the initial stages. The DIG said initially legal action will not be filed claiming a grace period will be granted so they can remove the tint or drapes.

The DIG of the Motor Traffic Division Palitha Fernando added individuals who have received prior approval from the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic will be exempt from legal action. He said Part 2 of number 20 of the Gazette states that a report by the IGP, or a letter from the Secretary of Defence or the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic will allow individuals to use tints or drapes.

The DIG also said they allow the tint for security reasons and if individuals have an illness. He said such persons can receive approval from the Commissioner of Motor Traffic.
