Over 14,300 families affected by adverse weather conditions

(UTV | COLOMBO) -The Meteorology Department stated that fairly heavy showers above 75 mm can be expected at some places in the Western Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts today (18).

Thundershowers will occur at times today in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts, the Department also observed.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization has issued a level 3 red alert to Ingiriya, Walallawita, Palindanuwara and Bulathsinhala divisional secretariats and surrounding areas in Kalutara district for today warning of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence if rain continues.

The Disaster Management Center reported that 14,309 families have been affected by the prevailing adverse weather conditions as of yesterday (17). Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere over the Island during the afternoon or night.

“The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers,” the Meteorology Department observed.
