President leaves for UN Climate Change Conference

(UTV | COLOMBO) – President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the island this morning to attend the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP26 Summit at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow, Scotland.

COP26 will bring together world leaders to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, that will begin tomorrow and continue till the 12th of November.

World leaders are meeting in Glasgow, on the 1st and 2nd of November ahead of the summit.

All United Nations member nations including President Rajapaksa have been invited to attend the Conference.

197 Heads of State are expected to attend the conference. Queen Elizabeth II has already confirmed that she will not attend the summit following medical advice.

The President is accompanied by Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, State Minister of Solar, Wind and Grid Power Generation Projects Development Duminda Dissanayake, Principal Advisor to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Foreign Secretary Admiral Jayanath Colombage and Secretary to the Ministry of Environment Dr. Anil Jasinghe.
