Dog breeder charged with animal cruelty

(UTV | COLOMBO) – A dog breeder and seller who mistreated the dogs he was rearing was released on surety bail.

The suspect, a resident of Kaldemulla was involved in the business of selling American Bulldogs. He was released on a surety bail of Rs. 1 million each by the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

The Magistrate released the 5 dogs on a bond of Rs. 15,000.

The Magistrate also ordered that the dogs be examined weekly by a veterinarian and a report be submitted to the court on the next hearing day.

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) had lodged a complaint with the Mount Lavinia Police on Monday alleging that five dogs had eaten the body parts of a dead dog who had been fasting for nearly a week at a house in the Kaldemulla in Moratuwa.

The suspect, who is in the business of selling dogs, had left the house after feeding the dogs with food enough for 3-days and had not returned home for 7-days due to his busy schedule.
