New govt. always respect instructions of Maha Sangha: PM

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The new government always respect instructions and advises of the Maha Sangha unlike the previous government, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said.

Speaking at an event held at Pilagoda Purwarama Vihara in Beddegama to award Adhikarna Sanghanayake Aktha Pathra to Chief Incumbent Ven. Lelwala Sumedha Thera, the prime minister said the place accorded to the temples deteriorated during the tenure of the previous government.

“This happened when the government was given the responsibility to protect Buddhism by the Constitution. However, that era has ended the new government always act based on instructions of the Maha Sangha,” he said.

He said the government decided to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council Resolution on the country and said the government should support the President when he has initiated a programme to develop the country.

“In a few days, the parliament will be dissolved and a general election will be held. We have to win this election and forge ahead,” he said.

Ven. Egodamulle Amaramolithissa Thera, Minister Ramesh Pathirana, MPs Mohan De Silva, Nishantha Muthuhettigamage, Chandima Weerakkody, Governor Willie Gamage and former MP Geetha Kumarasinghe were also present.
