Rosy Senanayake’s son to contest from UNP alliance

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake’s son Kanishka Senanayake is to enter into national politics and contest for the Colombo District from the UNP led alliance at the forthcoming general elections.

Ms. Senanayake who was speaking at a meeting of UNP activists in Colombo yesterday said she would prefer to give youngsters a chance to come forward and contest this year’s general elections.

“There is a common request that Kanishka should contest and therefore I would prefer that he contest the elections instead of me. I therefore leave it for the party leaders to decide,” she said.

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said he would prefer Ms. Senanayake to contest instead. “I would prefer to have Ms. Senanayake in Parliament as she had been instrumental in starting the programme of distributing a nutrition package worth Rs.20,000 to pregnant mothers,” he said.

However, MP Sujeewa Senasinghe in his speech said Ms. Senanayake should remain in the CMC and allow her son to contest.

It was announced at the end of the meeting that Mr. Kanishka Senanayake would be a new face at the general elections this year.
