CMC tyre-locks six vehicles after a maximum of 60 reminders

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has tyre-locked six vehicles for non-payment of parking fees and for not responding to late payment reminders up to a maximum of sixty times, CMC Engineer Manjula Kularatne said.

He said the regulation was enforced by updating the existing parking bylaws in May last year after implementing the smart parking management and fee collecting system installed in certain areas within the Colombo city limits.

The regulations were published in Gazette No:2029/29.

According to the Gazette notice legal action would be taken against the errant drivers who evaded paying parking fees.

“Tyre-locking was implemented for parking without paying the arrears or parking beyond the permitted time. It is now considered as unauthorized parking and is subject to a late fee. While the owner of the vehicle is liable to settle the cumulative late fee upon receiving such notice, the new law has also enabled the Right of Tenaga to enforce clamping or tyre-locking if the parking charges are not settled,” Mr. Kularatne said.

He said motorist should decide on the time he was going to park this vehicle in the meter-parking system-enforced areas. The payment should be done first for the decided parking hours. The payments can be done through parking meter pay points placed at the roadside with the use of any paying method,” he said

Mr. Kularatne said the motorists whose vehicles were tyre-locked should pay the dues to the CMC to get their vehicles released,” he said.
