Two gunmen killed in Kalmunai shootout – Army

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Army says two gunmen suspected to belong to a terrorist outfit were killed following an exchange of gunfire with security forces in Kalmunai last night.

The deceased gunmen are yet to be identified.

Army media stated reports confirmed that troops based on an intelligence tip-off received by the Police, when proceeding to search a safe house of suspected terrorists, had been met with the suspects triggering three explosions and subsequently firing at troops.

Troops retaliated and raided the safe house where a large cache of explosives had been stored.

The Army stated one person died in the crossfire, while 3-4 persons were reportedly injured.

Similarly, Army reports claim that there could be one or more suicide bomber inside the safe house either killed or in hiding.

However Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Commander, Security Forces – East stated that troops were unable to storm the place in the dark and due to heavy concentration of civilians’ houses around.
