“I operate independently in Parliament” – Speaker

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya says he operates in Parliament independently.

The Speaker requested Parliamentarians to refrain from leveling baseless allegations against him.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he was elected into his position with the support of 106 members of the UNP and 118 members from other political parties.

He said it is his duty to conduct himself in an unbiased manner.

The Speaker recalled the pressure and difficulties they faced as a member of the Opposition during the previous tenure of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led government.

Accordingly, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he does his best to give as many opportunities to members of the so called Joint Opposition (JO) to speak in Parliament.

However, the Speaker noted it is up to the party itself, in instances of internal conflict within a party, to solve them.
