Vote on Parliament Select Committee passed with 121 votes [UPDATE]

(UTV|COLOMBO) – UPDATE: A vote on the nominations to the Parliamentary Committee of Selection was passed with 121 votes in Parliament on Friday (23).

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya officially announced that the nominations to the Parliamentary Committee of Selection were passed in the vote taken using the electronic voting system.

Parliamentarians of the United National Front (UNF), the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) were in Parliament at the time of the vote.

However, UNF Parliamentarian Chathura Senaratne was not in Parliament at the time the vote was taken, it is learnt.

(UTV|COLOMBO) – UPDATE: Parliamentary sitting commenced with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya’s announcement which he proposed twelve members including five members from the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and United National Front (UNF) each, while one each for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to the Parliamentary Committee of Selection.

The UPFA however objected to the nominations saying it requires seven members in the Select Committee as it is in the Government, and later staged a walkout in protest over the actions of Speaker Jayasuriya.

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliament Galleries have been closed for the public during Parliamentary sessions set to convene at 10.30 AM on Friday (23).

Accordingly, the Public Gallery and the Special Invitees Gallery will be closed when the Parliament re-convenes today. Furthermore, the entire Parliamentary Complex will be closed for the general public except to Media Personnel.

Each person entering Parliament will be subjected to a thorough body-search, and additional Police Personnel have been deployed for security purposes.
