25% voter turnout in most districts

UTV | COLOMBO – Voting for the 2020 General Election to elect the ninth Parliament commenced at 7 this morning and will conclude at 5pm.

Voting is underway at 12,985 polling centres in 22 electoral districts.

Under the 2019 voter register 16,263,885 persons are eligible to cast vote at the Parliamentary Election. 7,542 candidates are vying for 196 seats at the ninth Parliament.

District Returning Officers claim that voting for the General Election has been peaceful thus far.

They stated that as of 10 this morning, a voter turnout of between 20-25% was recorded.

The Returning Officers said a 25% voter turnout was recorded in the Colombo, Kandy, Kilinochchi, Kegalle, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Matara, Kurunegala and Jaffna Districts.

A 30% voter turnout was reported in Monaragala and Trincomalee. A 20% voter turnout was recorded in the Puttalam and Vanni District.
