Gammanpila files petition in SC

UTV | COLOMBO – United People’s Freedom Alliance Colombo District Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila yesterday (7), filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the Draft Bill of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which was submitted to the Parliament on 5 September by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) as a Private Member Bill.

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader has claimed in his application that the Draft Bill presented by the JVP was in direct violation of the Constitution contravening Articles 3, 4 and 30(2).

The petitioner has stated that based on the provisions contained in Article 83 of the Constitution, the proposals contained in the JVP Draft Bill cannot be ratified other than through a two thirds majority plus a public referendum.

The said Draft Bill was tabled in Parliament by JVP Gampaha District MP Vijitha Herath.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution proposes to abolish the Executive Presidency, among other proposals.
