Minor parties demand Proportional Representation

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Leaders of the minor parties representing the Government, as well as the Opposition, yesterday (20th February) requested Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to hold the upcoming Local Government Elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) system.

These parties include the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC), the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the United Socialist Party (USP).

One party leader reportedly opined that the proposed mixed system where 30% and 70% of members are elected through Proportional Representation and First Past the Post systems accordingly, would negatively impact the representation of minority parties in local authorities.

Therefore, if the election is held under the mixed system, he reportedly stated that his party would not contest in the election.
