Engine driver suspended over Panaliya Train Accident

(UTV|COLOMBO) The accident occurred when a Rambukkana bound train had collided with a stationed Colombo-Kandy office train at the Panaliya train station at around 6.30 last evening.

A total of 32 passengers’ sustained injuries following the accident reported at around 6.30pm yesterday.

Both trains were reportedly derailed after the collision between the Polgahawela and Rambukkana stations, disrupting rail services along the mainline.

Civil Aviation and Transport Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva had directed the Railway General Manager to suspend the driver of the train pending an inquiry.

Following directives issued by the Ministry, a special three-member committee headed by the Railway General Manager, was also appointed to investigate the Panaliya train accident.

The Minister instructed that disciplinary action be taken against the responsible persons irrespective of their position.
