IGP Pujith Jayasundara’s ‘secret’ weapon

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s police chief Pujith Jayasundara tacitly admitted that his leadership had failed, but asked his men to adopt a new tactic – meditation – to improve service delivery and better enforce law and order.

Jayasundara, who had been criticised for publicly saying that the law could be bent but not broken, sobbed in front of over 100 senior officers at police headquarters on Wednesday morning admitting that he had largely failed.

At the end of his emotional confession, the Inspector-General ordered that all officers and other rankers should start their day after a session of Anapanasati (mindfulness of breathing) meditation.

During his three hour sermon to the senior most officers of the service, IGP Jayasundara said the service had failed because they did not pay much attention to spiritual development.

Soon after he was named Inspector-General in April last year, Jayasundara said he got the top job because he attended 35 ‘bodi poojas’, or offering water to ficus religiosa trees, seeking the appointment.

A  regional police heads have now been asked to order all ranks to begin the day with Anapanasati meditation followed by a brief session of ‘maithri bavana’ or loving kindness meditation.

Mr. Jayasundara had been pulled up recently by the authorities over a leaked video tape which suggested that he was interfering in investigations on behalf of a VVIP. (Courtesy – Newsin.asia)
