Sri Lanka marks National Day of Mourning today

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Government on Tuesday (01) declared today (02), as a Day of National Mourning as a mark of respect to cinematic genius Dr. Lester James Peries, the Presidential Media Division (PMD) stated.

The funeral of world renowned film producer Dr. Lester James Peries will be held at 3.00 PM today at Independence Square with full State patronage.

The remains will be kept at Independence Square from 12 noon to 3.00 PM for the public to pay their last respects.

Internationally acclaimed, Sri Lankan Film Producer and Director Dr. Lester James Peries passed away on Sunday (29) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

Dr. Peries was involved in over 28 films, including shorts and documentaries.

He received critical acclaim for directing Rekava, Gamperaliya, Nidhanaya, Golu Hadawatha, Kaliyugaya, Awaragira and Yuganthaya.

His movie Wekande Walauwa, starring Ravindra Randeniya and Malini Fonseka, was Sri Lanka’s first ever submission for the Academy Awards.
