Railway Unions threaten strike over privatisation moves

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Railway Trade Union Alliance (RTUA) on Monday (02) threatened to support a post- Sinhala and Tamil New Year strike action by the Railway guards and engine drivers, accusing the Government of taking preliminary measures to privatise the Railway Department.

“The Government’s intension is to privatise the Railway Department when considering the decisions taken by Railway Department heads,” RTUA Co-Convenor S. P. Withanage said.

If the Government does not withdraw the decision on privatisation, the RTUA will support the indefinite strike by the Railway guards and engine drivers, after the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, he added.
