Suspect held for possessing 775 conch shells

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Based on information received by the Navy, a group of naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command apprehended a person for possessing 775 conch shells, during a search conducted in Anawasala beach area, Kalpitiya.

The possession, trade and transportation of conch shells of this nature which boast of high value, has been banned under the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act (No. 2 of 1996).

The Navy also seized a dinghy and a fishing net weighing 10 kg along with the suspect. The apprehended person, conch shells and the dinghy were handed over to the Fisheries Directorate of Puttalam for onward action.
