(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Two more Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants produced by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit was bestowed on the public on Saturday (20).
The project is being implemented under a visionary concept of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne. The two facilities were installed at the premises of the Sri Lanka Transport Board and Divisional Secretariat in Vavuniya.
The financial allocation for the facilities was made by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease. The RO plant erected at the Sri Lanka Transport Board premises can produce clear drinking water for 365 families in the area. Meanwhile, the RO system installed at the Divisional Secretariat will quench the thirst of 425 families in and around the Divisional Secretariat.
The Navy’s Research and Development Unit has been extremely instrumental in producing these systems utilising their technological know-how and expertise. They have successfully installed 202 RO plants in areas where high prevalence of kidney diseases are recorded, to date. As a result over 100,790 families and 75,000 school children were facilitated with safe drinking water.
Further, the Navy is determined to carry forward this noble effort into the future being a great sigh of relief to the community battered by kidney disease.
