Family of Odisha youth in Sri Lankan prison seek their release

(UDHAYAM, JAGATSINGHPUR) – The family of two Odisha youth in a Sri Lankan prison have appealed for their release, orissadiary.com reported.

The two Indian Muslim youth have been languishing in a Sri Lanka prison for the past three-months due to lack of assistance from their country’s High Commission in Sri Lanka.

The wives of both victims have approached the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and state Home Department through the Jagatsinghpur District Administration seeking the release of their husbands.

The Muslim youths have been identified as Salim Khan hailing from the Dhanipur village, six km away from Jagatsinghpur District Headquarters and his colleague Sk Tamizuddin, a resident of Bhimkarpur under the Jajpur District.

Reports said the youth had been employed at a hotel in Colombo as attendants having valid Indian passports and Tourist Visas arranged by their employer.

According to Jahanara Begum Wife of Salim Khan, her husband’s Visa ended on 16 February 2017 along with his colleague Sk Tamizzuddin and soon after the Visa expiration the Police arrested them.

Concerned with the plights of the arrested youth, State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Basanta Panda had written a letter to Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj requesting her to take steps to secure their release.
