Nepal President visits Kelaniya Temple

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari accompanied by Minister of Justice and Buddhasasana Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorale visited Kelaniya Temple today (15) and offered flowers to the Buddha.

Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera explained the history of the temple to the Nepal President and the delegation.

President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari, was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony of the United Nations (UN) Day of Vesak Celebrations and is on a four day tour.

Kelaniya Temple built by Naga King Maniakkika, the temple, hallowed during the third and final visit of Buddha to Sri Lanka enshrines a gem studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. According to Mahavansa the Stupa is built on the ground which has the throne.
