Social security tax on electricity bill too

(UTV | COLOMBO) –   The Ceylon Electricity Board has taken steps to collect the social security contribution tax through the electricity bills from the 01st of this month from the electricity consumers who get electricity from the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Mr. Janaka Ratnayake, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka, explaining further in this regard,

“Various parties in the power industry, including electricity consumers, have made inquiries about how the Social Security Contribution Tax will affect the power industry.  We have proposed to the Finance Ministry to exempt electricity consumption from this tax as the electricity tariff has recently been revised.  The Ministry of Finance has informed us that according to the relevant Act the electricity supply of the Ceylon Electricity Board is subject to this tax.  Accordingly, from October 1, 2022, steps will be taken to levy this tax on the purchase of electricity from all parties who purchase electricity from the Ceylon Electricity Board.  “

Electricity supply by Ceylon Electricity Board is subject to Social Security Contribution Tax as per the Social Security Tax Act.
