Two new mosquito species found in Sri Lanka

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Health authorities have identified two new mosquito species in Sri Lanka.

The National Organizer of the Association of Health Entomology Officials, Disnaka Dissanayake said the mosquito species known as Culex sintellus has been found from samples obtained in Mirigama and Kalutara.

It has been identified following genetic research.

The Culex sintellus mosquito species has been reported from India and Thailand previously.

Disnaka Dissanayake confirmed that the species known as Culex niyainfula which is prevalent in India had also been found in the country.

He said the Culex niyainfula species is known to be linked to the cerebral malaria disease.
