CEB warns of extended power cuts if it runs out of coal

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka should be prepared for an extended power outage for around 10 hours a day in the event of a coal shortage, warned the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union Chairman Anil Ranjith Induwara.

He said that by October 2022 if the CEB doesn’t receive sufficient stock of coal, it will have to cut down on electricity production.

He said at present electricity generation is sourced from Hydro Power Plants, and Thermal Power Plants, and when the rainy season comes to an end, Sri Lanka will have serious issues in Hydro Power Generation.

In the meantime, he pointed out that one Generator at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant is NOT operating due to maintenance, and the CEB is hopeful it can be added to the National Grid by November 2022.
