(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Railway Station Masters’ Union says train operations could be hampered if the current fuel crisis continues.
President of Union Sumedha Somaratne said the capacity of the Railway Department has been stretched at present due to the prevailing climate in the country.
He said due to financial, transport and fuel issues, a large number of people are using trains at present.
Sumedha Somaratne noted that low rail fares has also contributed to the increase in the number of passengers in trains in recent times.
However he said, the Railway Department is facing a number of issues to fulfil the demand.
The President of the Station Masters’ Union said not all employees have been given official railway quarters and therefore such employees must use public transport or private vehicles to report to work.
He noted although Sri Lanka Railways is declared an essential service, employees do not get provisions to obtain fuel.
Sumedha Somaratne noted therefore if workers are unable to report to duty, rail services could also be disrupted in future.
