Grama Niladharis to register vehicle owners to provide fuel

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Minister of Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says that steps will be taken to register vehicle owners from today to implement the program to issue fuel based on the vehicle number.

He stated relevant registrations will be carried out through Grama Niladhari officers, and Agriculture and Development officers across the country.

Minister Wijesekera claimed the proposal to distribute fuel based on number plates was due to be carried out today.

However, the Minister added that due to the arrival of a shipment of fuel being delayed such measures are not possible.

He said a meeting with the Secretaries of the 25 districts was held last Friday where it was informed that each vehicle owner and those who require fuel for other essential purposes were to be registered in the respective areas through the relevant Grama Niladhari officers, and Agricultural Officers and Development officers.

Furthermore, industries requiring fuel would also be registered while fuel would be distributed based on QR codes.

Minister Wijesekara noted fuel consumption was required to be decreased by 60% while individuals should cut down on travel in the coming days.

Furthermore, two ministers will depart to Russia today to discuss the importation of fuel.
