Police probe launched into Education Ministry protest

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Police have launched an investigation into the protest held in front of the Ministry of Education, in Battaramulla yesterday (10).

According to the Police Media Division, university students who were involved in the protest had attacked a Police officer in the area, and the injured Police Officer is currently receiving treatment at the Narahenpita Police Hospital.

Police also noted that the protesters caused damaged to the property of the Ministry of Education.

Accordingly, the incident is due to be reported to the Kaduwela Magistrate today (11).

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has arrested a suspect who assaulted Police Officers in the Panchikawatte area on 9th May, when several incidents of violence took place.

According to the Police Media Division, the suspect has been arrested over the charges of attacking a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), a Superintendent of Police (ASP) and other officers, hijacking the SUV in which the police officers were travelling and setting the vehicle on fire.

The suspect was identified as a 43-year-old resident of Maligawatta, and was remanded until 24th June after he was produced at the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court.
