President to open Central Expressway second phase today

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The second phase of the Central Expressway from Mirigama to Kurunegala, the Athugalpura Entrance, will be declared open to the public today.

The event will get underway under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The length of the second phase of the Central Expressway from Mirigama to Kurunegala is 40.91km.

Built to minimise environmental and social impacts, the expressway will bypass urban areas and pass through mainly vacant land.

The four-lane section of the road from Mirigama to Kurunegala has now been identified as the most beautiful expressway section in the country.

The Central Expressway segment from Mirigama to Kurunegala includes five interchanges with toll counters at Mirigama, Nakalagamuwa, Dambokka, Kurunegala and Yaggapitiya.

This section of road was constructed by local contractors with local funds at a cost of Rs.137 billion.

The four-lane Colombo-Kandy Central Expressway is being completed under four segments.

The first quarter is from Kadawatha to Meerigama spanning 37.09km, the second quarter from Mirigama to Kurunegala spanning 40.91km, the access road 9.7km running up to Ambepussa, the third quarter from Kurunegala, Pothuhera to Galagedara spanning 32.50km, and fourth quarter is from Kurunegala to Dambulla 60.30km in length.
