CEB unions to protest opposite the headquarters

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ceylon Electricity Board United Trade Union Alliance says a protest will be staged opposite the CEB headquarters in Colombo today(03).

Union Secretary Ranjan Jayalal said members of several unions will arrive from Hambantota, Jaffna and from the Eastern Province to join the protest at noon.

He said although the government has issued a circular cancelling leave of all employees, they will stage the protest by reporting sick.

Jayalal noted the Yugadanavi Power Plant deal was signed without the knowledge of the Cabinet of Ministers and most government members.

He also requested religious leaders to demand the government to scrap the deal.

Ranjan Jayalal said there is an internal rift in the government over the deal as it is evidently detrimental to the country.

He said if the government is unwilling to listen to concerns, they will announce dates to launch mass-scale protests.

On a separate note, the Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Board United Trade Union Alliance Ranjan Jayalal noted the power supply will not be disrupted today owing to the union action.

He said due to the prevailing adverse conditions, power supply could be interrupted with falling trees and downed power lines.

He said since they have summoned technical staff and regional employees for the protest, power restoration may take nearly 24-hours.

Ranjan Jayalal said the government must take full responsibility if delays are reported in restoring the power supply.

He said the country is in a dangerous situation at present and therefore all factions must support their struggle and force the government to rescind agreements that are detrimental to the nation.
