Asela Sampath released on bail

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Consumer Rights Activist Asela Sampath, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has been released on bail.

He was produced before the Colombo Additional Magistrate today (26).

Sampath, the President of the All Island Canteen Owners’ Association (AICOA) and the President of the Foundation for People’s Right Protection (FPRP), was taken into the custody over alleged misinformation on social media regarding the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID‑19 Vaccine being given in the country.

The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by the General Superintendent of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), the Police Media Spokesperson, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said.
