Sri Lanka condemns attack on Maldivian Speaker

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka has condemned the terrorist attack on Maldivian Speaker of Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry said the government of Sri Lanka joins in expressing solidarity with the people and the government of Maldives while strongly condemning all forms of violence.

Nasheed is in a critical condition following the bomb attack.

Four others were injured in the blast, which is being treated as a terrorist incident.

No-one has claimed the attack.

The explosion happened in the capital Male, just before a night-time curfew was due to go into effect as part of measures to contain coronavirus.

Local media reports said a home-made explosive device was planted on a motorbike parked near Nasheed’s car.
