‘Police Emergency Response Unit is seriously misused’ – DIG Ajith Rohana

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the Police Emergency Response Unit (119) which was established for the public about the day-to-day accidents, disasters, and serious criminal activities in 2004, has been seriously misused.

He says that this situation was identified after an in-depth analysis of the complaints received by 119.

The Police Emergency Response Unit received 1,232,222 telephone calls in the year 2020.

It is reported that the Police Emergency Response Unit receives more than 3000 active calls per day.

However, it has been reported that more than 8,000 people a day try to contact the police emergency unit.

Another important finding of this study is that 93% of calls to the Police Emergency Response Unit are for non-essential matters.

The Police Media Spokesman states that this is a serious obstacle to the response and effectiveness of the Police Emergency Response Unit.
