Doctor who treated Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny after poisoning dies

(UTV | RUSSIA) – One of the top doctors at the Russian hospital where opposition leader Alexei Navalny was initially treated after being poisoned last summer has died, according to multiple reports.

Sergey Maximishin, a 55-year-old deputy head at the Omsk emergency hospital, died “suddenly” this week, hospital officials said.

A spokesman for the regional health ministry told Russian newspaper Kommersant that the cause of death was “a heart attack.”

Navalny’s chief of staff, Leonid Volkov, said he would not “dismiss possibility of foul play” given how much the doctor knew about the politician’s condition when he arrived at the hospital. Navalny’s supporters insist the Russian government was behind the shocking assassination attempt, an allegation that Kremlin officials have repeatedly denied.
